I was unlikely to see the film, and now I definitely won't.

But I will certainly read this review more than once. Tapen packs far too much insight and wisdom into his writing. Once is not enough!

Thanks.

I wrote the review not to try to influence anybody to see the movie. I saw this saga as an unfolding of three *reel* cultures: US, France and Mexico. The movie cost $26m. It made $8m in France, another $2m in Italy, and a million in Spain so far. Netflix bought the global rights for another $8m. The best the producers can hope for is to break even - Oscars or not.

In Mexico, the movie did not resonate - not because of violence - but for the perceived inauthenticity. Bad accents, bad slangs that Mexicans do not use, it often felt like a Google translation of French to Spanish.

Oscars are not given for art films. The first requirement for an Oscar nomination is a commercial release in the six metros in the US for at least a week. France runs very differently.

Non-English films rarely win the Best Picture at the Oscars. In 2019, Korean movie Parasite was the first ever. Emilia Perez is a long shot for that (conditional on BAFTA).
