If it hadn't been for his plethora of other skills and accomplishments, Tapen would've made a name just as a yoga teacher ... who charges nothing to share his knowledge and passion.

I had two forks on the road where I could have become a serious yoga teacher/researcher.

The first fork came in 1985. I got a campus interview in Iowa - at the MIU. I met a guy on campus - the Chief of Staff of the Boston Regional Medical Center. I was impressed. But, then, I realized that I will not be able to teach economics/yoga the way *I* wanted to. It would all have to be transcendental meditation - that I did not believe. Even the doctor from Boston drank their kool-aid. His name is Deepak Chopra. So, I did not take up their offer. Instead I went to Singapore.

The second fork came another two decades later. I was going to set up a yoga/stretch studio in Mexico City. I figured I could bleed money for a year from my savings and it would become viable after that. I was about to sign a studio contract located at the heart of the embassy zone. I was in contact with all the big embassies. All I needed was 50 regular clients. It was not a big ask. Then, my Mexican associate, Enrique, who was a key part of the plan, died at 41 - unexpectedly.

"When you come to a fork in the road, take it."
